End of season feel as Wolves lose at home again

Wolves 0 v Huddersfield Town 1

Huddersfield was once a gritty northern industrial town famous for woollen textiles and a football team who played in blue and white. When Alvin Toffler’s Third Wave hollowed out its manufacturing it turned into a gentrified market town whose team now plays in high viz yellow. As such they look more like a gang of Polish builders than a football side. But that, as they say, is progress. And for those of a certain vintage, with a corresponding diminution of vision there were benefits, their every move clearly discerned. Just a shame that it was the home side I had come to watch and, as with much that has occurred this season, it was to be another underwhelming experience.

I missed Saturday’s encounter against Blackburn Rovers. But had I been present I suspect the report on the game would have struggled to go beyond two short paragraphs. This evening’s game had a similarly soporific feel the only moment of first half excitement arriving in the thirty seventh minute when Isiah Brown’s speculative curler from twenty five yards beat Harry Burgoyne to nestle in the Wolves net. As for the home side they spent most of the half playing keep ball just inside their own half. They go nowhere at a ponderous pace and hence rarely trouble the opposition. And when they do venture beyond the half way line they have no-one, bar Ben Marshall, who can inject pace or produce something out of the ordinary. Thus come half time they found themselves behind.

Things improved during the second half, the introduction of Joe Mason for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Jordan Graham for Morgan Gibbs White offering a more enterprising dynamic. In the fifty second minute a flowing move which opened up the Huddersfield defence ended with David Edwards hitting an upright. But that, bar some huffing and puffing, was about it.

The Wolves squad is too big. It is ram full of run of the mill footballers. Ripe for yet another season, becalmed in the Sargasso Sea of Championship football.

The English Achilles heel

How does one find the grit, the steel to succeed in top end sport? It seems to elude the English. Just over a week ago England’s cricketers took an improbable lead against Australia a team generally noted for their hard as nails approach... Continue →
