Easter cheer as Edwards’ header ends Molineux rollercoaster

2-1 up at half time, Wolves were in the play-offs. When in minute 47 they went 3-1 up, Benik Afobe poking home from inside the six yard box following a corner, hotels in north London experienced a sudden spike in advanced room reservations. For the next fifteen minutes Wolves bossed affairs their lead seemingly unassailable against a Leeds United side devoid of ideas and the wherewithal to implement them.

Then in the 65th minute an aimless ball in to the Wolves box caught the home side’s defence knapping. Should Carl Ikeme have claimed it? Should Danny Batth have booted it to safety? In the end neither did either as Batth’s half hearted attempt at a clearance sliced off his boot and into the net. Buoyed by this gift, Leeds suddenly realised that they were no longer staring at oblivion and ten minutes later were presented with another. Richard Stearman, perhaps with thoughts of Easter playing on his conscience, conceded possession to Alex Mowatt. Already moving at pace the Leeds midfielder first glided passed Batth before unleashing a curling left foot shot passed the outstretched hand of keeper Ikeme. Once again north London hotels were receiving calls, this time cancelling earlier reservations.

But it was still not over and following a number of missed half chances in minute 87 the ball fell to Kevin MacDonald wide on the left. Knowing that he owed his teammates a favour - his first half pass having gifted Leeds’ opening goal – the midfielders’ whipped in swinging cross was met by the head of David Edwards. Glancing it perfectly, its’ pace and trajectory was too much for keeper Marco Silvestre and as it sailed into the net the South Bank erupted.

So did end the Molineux rollercoaster as bizarre a ride as has been experienced in as long as I can remember. But a result which, come the end of the season, could be crucial in propelling Wolves to the premier league. The side is settled, confidence is high, chances are being created, many are being taken and results are going our way.
